Vulcan Energy Resources

Lithium-production and renewable energies

Vulcan Energy is implementing projects in the Upper Rhine Graben for the combined production of renewable energy and climate-neutral lithium. The company combines existing and commercially proven technologies to extract lithium from underground thermal brine and then process it into battery-ready material for the European automotive industry. This process also uses the same underground brine to generate renewable energy through deep geothermal energy, which is supplied to surrounding communities in the region in the form of green electricity and climate-neutral heat. In this way, Vulcan is able to contribute to both the mobility transition in Europe and the regional energy transition. The company currently operates a Central Lithium Electrolysis Optimization Plant (CLEOP) in the Höchst Industrial Park for the production of sustainable, domestically produced battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate. As part of the first project phase, “Lionheart,” Vulcan also plans to build a Central Lithium Plant (CLP) for the industrial-scale production of this critical raw material.
